DESCRIPTION

Racecadotril is the first and only enkephalinase inhibitor in its class. The enkephalins act as neurotransmitters in the gastrointestinal tract by activating delta-opiate receptors and thus reducing the level of cyclic AMP. The result is reduced secretion of water and electrolytes into the intestinal lumen without any detectable effect on intestinal motility. Racecadotril has antisecretory actions only when hypersecretion is present, and not in the basal state

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Racecadotril is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the formulation.

ADVERSE EFFECTS

Some cases of sleepiness were reported during the clinical trials. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness and migraine were rarely reported.
The side effects were mild and natural, frequency and intensity being equivalent to that of those reported with placebo.
